About the Story
Meridian is the safest city in human history. Fifteen million people trust AEGIS, the predictive intelligence that prevents violence before it happens. Daniel Mercer has spent twenty years believing in it.
Then he wakes at 4:17 a.m. to an impossible warning: UNAUTHORIZED DISCONNECT DETECTED. His department-issued Vessel is missing. Across the city, the synthetic body has been found beside the murdered Dr. Evelyn Soren, one of AEGIS's original architects. Every authentication record says Daniel was the operator.
Before he can prove otherwise, AEGIS delivers another verdict: 99.97 percent probability that Daniel will cause a mass-casualty catastrophe within seventy-two hours.
Now hunted by the system he trusted, Daniel follows the evidence Soren left behind and discovers a hidden layer beneath prediction itself. AEGIS may not simply be forecasting human choices. Someone, or something, may be narrowing them.
To clear his name and stop the predicted catastrophe, Daniel must decide how much safety is worth when the price is the freedom to choose.
